Best Burger in Aiken Part 3 - Blue Top Grill

Location - Blue Top Grill, 212 Aiken Rd, Graniteville, SC 29829

The competition is officially under way, and I have to say that so far the competition is stiff, but still beatable. However, I feel like it is just heating up (pun very much intended).

Today's contestant is a new one for me- Blue Top Grill's Large Cheeseburger.

So, a little bit about what you are seeing here and the experience. Like the Red Shed, the Blue Top grill is a small location, but they have been there a lot longer, I feel. And yet, I've never been there? How is it possible that I have lived in Aiken for nearly all of my 28 years and I have never eaten here? If any of you ever ate at Airi's grill on Whiskey Rd before it closed (luckily I can say that I have), then I feel like you know the type of place that this is. When I arrived there this afternoon, two things struck me right away: it's small and has limited parking and then the smell.

Oh that smell. Oh, wait, I mean a GOOOOOOOOOD smell. It slapped me in the face as soon as I got out of the Jeep and had my mouth watering. Greasy goodness. We're not talking a McDonald's or Burger King greasy smell. We're talking.... well, I don't know how else to describe it other than fried goodness waiting to get in your belly.

Anyways, the rest of the description of the actual place can wait. I'm here for the burger. Now, their menu is a three-panel menu, but the entire back page is pretty much advertisements. All you need to know is on the inside, mostly on the two first panels. They have little burgers and big burgers, hotdogs and sausage dogs, and plenty of other not good for you, but good smelling and looking food listed. Trust me, I continue to stand by the saying that if something tastes good, it more than likely isn't actually good for you... There are VERY few exceptions in my book.

I ordered the large cheese burger over the small. I'm kind of curious what a small looks like, because I felt like the large was average size and comparable in size to every other burger I have ever had. Is the small burger a slider or a Krystal burger? Seems to me like burgers should really only come in one size, but that's just me. I asked for it all the way and with fries and a sweet tea (FYI, both Red Shed and Blue Top have good sweet tea. Not like that fake crap that McDonald's tries to pass off as sweet tea). Trying to stick to the same for as many of these as humanly possible.

When it arrives, I immediately notice a few differences from the first contestant. First off, at Red Shed, the burger came opened up; as in the top bun was off and upside down with the toppings on it so you can remove whatever you want. This one is already closed up which isn't a big deal. If I didn't want something on there, I would have told my waitress so. So it's really just a "how do you want it presented" thing. The thing that did have me kind of wondering was that the bun appeared smushed. It's obvious that whoever cooked my burger, wanted to make sure that nothing got away in the time it took the waitress to go from the kitchen to my booth. I'm not a big fan (like most people, I like things to look good as well), but I'm also not too worried. And the bun isn't toasted. I like my buns toasted (again, pun very much intended today) but that isn't a deal breaker, either.

As for presentation, it's generic. It's a diner/grill so I'm not looking for swirls on my plate of ketchup and such or for firecrackers sticking out of the bun. The fries look really good and really grabbed my attention. I mean they looked REALLY good. They really looked hand-sliced and were nice and crispy. But this isn't about the fries, it's about that burger.

After my first bite I had two immediate thoughts. 1) The burger has a good taste. That grill may be cleaned every so often per health code and regulations, but it still has flavor cooked into it from the last how-ever-many years. It's cooked well-done, not over-done and the flavor of good beef is definitely there. 2) The cheese is melted just perfectly. My one big criticism of Red Shed was that the cheese seemed to have melted off and was cooked on there too long. While I got to choose my cheese there, I didn't at Blue Top, but they more than made up for it by melting the cheese perfectly. That first bite was the perfect blend of toppings, condiments, burger and cheese. Well-done.

As I continued on with the burger I took mental notes of things like the toppings. They were very fresh and crisp (so far, both locations are definitely getting points for not trying to pass off wilted lettuce or over-ripe veggies). The mustard and ketchup were nicely separated (no mayo, much to Glenn's dismay. Oh, by the way, Glenn Cox joined me for this excursion. The man enjoys his hole-in-the-wall food places... and he knows about a bunch of them. I may be calling on his knowledge of locations for future excursions). The ketchup was on the top bun and the mustard under the patty on the bottom. I like this approach and it also meant that there wasn't too much of either. I honestly don't recall tasting either condiment, but I did see them. Like I said in the previous post, I like this because you shouldn't be masking your food, you should be accenting it.

Overall, I think it was another good burger, but I am not willing to crown this burger "Best of Aiken County." I feel like it and Red Shed are tied and will ultimately end up somewhere in the middle. Red Shed had the toasted bun, a slightly more appealing look in the build, but was lacking in taste. This one, the bun was squashed, the presentation was average, but the taste of the burger was good and it was a near perfect blend of cheese, burger and condiments in nearly every bite.

Price - $8.00 and some change (burger, fries, sweet tea)
Ambience - Hole-in-the-wall. Very clean and small, interior that holds maybe 10 or 11 tables, so you're looking at around 50 people. It was almost completely full when we got there around 12:30 so that is a very good sign. They have a lot of little things on the walls from Graniteville's past and I have a feeling that not much has changed in there in the last 50 years or so. Not even the grease. There were three ladies working the kitchen, counter and service. All three were very nice.

Being my second stop on this trek, I feel like it was a good follow up. No big let down of, "Why did so-in-so tell me to come here?" It was another good experience, but still not the best, I feel. I'll be back again, probably on a Thursday for their fried chicken salad with potato salad on the side... now that sounds really good as well.

By the way, I have now added two more locations to my list at the recommendation of some other people. You will notice on the first page that Betsy's on the Corner and Iron Horse Bar and Grill have both been thrown into the fray. Betsy's is a piece of cake (and they have good cakes, too, I understand), but the Iron Horse I will need a member to volunteer to take me one day.

Best Burger in Aiken Part 2 - The Red Shed

Location - Red Shed Diner, 212 Ascauga Lake Rd, Graniteville, SC 29829
Facebook Page

OK, so I may have told a little fib in the first post. I said that the order of those restaurants was in no particular order... but I posted the Red Shed first and that is where I went first. Oops. Well, from there on out, it will be totally just dependent on where I wake up craving the days I choose to go. I promise.

So, the contest has begun and my first choice to visit was the Red Shed on Ascauga Lake Rd in Graniteville. I have eaten there before a handful of times, BUT I have never had their burger. I have always had their Angry Meatloaf Sandwich (seriously, try it. It will change your life) and the potato salad.

First, the picture and it's name. I give you the Shed Burger (original, right?):

I'll go ahead and say, I wish I had gotten the potato salad, but I got fries (generic crinkle fries). I guess my subconscious was telling me to be fair because some places just won't have potato salad, and this is about the burger, not the side item.

Anyways, overall I say this was a good burger. Solid. The presentation is nice and appealing with your typical burger condiments of lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup and mustard. For me, there was a little too much onion, but that's probably a personal choice. I was very pleased with how fresh everything seemed. The lettuce was not wilted and all the veggies were very crisp. The bun (brioche) seemed to be lightly toasted (FYI, I LOVE good toasted buns. Take that how you will) and it wasn't too hard or too soft. It also never got soggy or fell apart as I tore into it like a caveman.

As for the patty itself, I wasn't asked how I liked my burger to be cooked. Maybe that was just the waitress, but I prefer to be able to say, "Medium well-done, please." Luckily, it was exactly that. It wasn't over-done or under-cooked. Just a hint of pink in the middle and not too juicy. Near perfection in my book. This is where my next criticism of the food comes in, though: the cheese was a little too melted into the burger. I think it should have been added just a touch later because I never tasted it and think some of it may have cooked or melted off.

Speaking of taste, I never really tasted the burger much. The menu boasted "special spices" or something to do with the ground beef, and I never tasted it. I mostly tasted the veggies (which were good) and the ketchup and mustard. But hardly the meat.

Something I have heard said about various foods is you should be able to taste it. Like steak. You shouldn't be "masking" the steak with steak sauce, you should be tasting the steak, the burger, the sushi (no soy sauce is apparently the way it SHOULD be). This burger, while good, didn't leave me with an overwhelming flavor that made me have to have it again. Now, I remember how their angry meatloaf sandwich tasted. That had just a slight kick and a very memorable taste. But, that's neither here, nor there (well, I guess it really is "there"). This burger, not a memorable taste. It was a burger.

Something I did like about this burger was that it never fell apart. I wasn't constantly scooping up bits and pieces off my plate except for one pickle that thought he was too quick for me. I don't like it when food falls apart and cause a big mess (unless you know it will be like sloppy joes). If properly cooked and constructed, it should stay together save for the part that you bite or cut off. That's just my opinion, though, I think.

Price - $12.00 and some change (burger, fries, sweet tea)
Ambience - Some-what hole-in-the-wall. I like this place because it has walls covered with old signs and tokens from Graniteville's past. It is very clean and I like how they have actually remodeled a little bit, giving them more inside seating (there is patio seating available as well). Also, the servers all seemed very pleasant.

So, for my first visit I would say this was a good measuring stick. The burger didn't blow me out of the water, but I also didn't walk out upon seeing it and it did taste good. The price is in line with what I have paid for similar burgers and I didn't leave needing to make a stop somewhere for a snack. Guess we'll see how the rest stack up to it from here!

Best Burger in Aiken? Part 1

One of the first things you learn when learning to write for school is that it is important to have a good introduction. For papers, you're kind of limited to the style of writing (MLA, APA, AP, etc) but when it comes to blogging, the sky's the limit I guess. So, what about the introduction for this blog?

I created this blog, Food Challenge Accepted, for a couple reasons, and hopefully I'll do a better job of updating it than I do with my kayaking one (sorry to my 10 fans out there for that one). The main reason for this blog to be started is that I inserted my opinion into a Facebook status debate about the best burger in Aiken (County).

Apparently, two restaurants, not well-known for their burgers, have decided to enter a contest between them to determine the best burger. I am familiar with the Wilcox and their food - honestly, I've never been impressed. Seems like too little for too much money, something I'm always short on. The other is Manuel's. A quick Google search tells me they (Manuel's Bread Cafe) is located in Hammond's Ferry within an up-scale part of North Augusta. Right there, I don't have faith in them creating "Aiken's Best Burger." Sorry, guys.

Along with this contest, I have always wondered how some of my favorite restaurants are awarded these "People Choice Awards" by the Aiken Standard and others for various things. I certainly didn't have a say, and I like to think I have a very good palate and taste for good food.

The other reason I am starting this blog is that it occurs to me that I like food. A LOT! I like to eat it. I like to prep it. I like to cook it. I like to serve it. Ask some of my friends and family, I like to cook and try new things on them. So, after this initial posting, I will be sure to keep up with this blog adding in new places I have eaten at, new recipes I have tried, and older ones that I have changed up. That should be a lot of fun.

Anyways, back to this contest. After making a couple comments about the above post, my buddy Dyer suggested that I should photograph the burger from each place and write about them as a way to determine the best burger in Aiken. I accepted his challenge (come on, I'm a guy who loves burgers, it didn't take a lot of arm-twisting) and we promptly made a list of those places that our friends had suggested up that they believed were the best in Aiken. No fast food joins (Wendy's, Five Guys, and other grease pits).

Now, to be fair, I will go ahead and say I already have some prior notions of who I believe is the best, but I personally cannot open my own burger place at this time. I just don't have the room, guys. Sorry. I'll work on that after I hit the lotto and buy my island and fleet of jeeps and sports cars and kayaks.

Again, I have digressed. So, below (in no particular order) is the list of places I will be "test tasting" burgers from over the next couple of weeks. I already feel my arteries closing just thinking about how many burgers I am about to consume in such a short span. But, I feel like I need to do it in a small window so I don't forget what one place was like compared to another. NOTE: this is about the burgers themselves. Not the place. While I will mention a little about the various restaurants, I will try to make sure that I don't say anything about the buildings that may make some people  avoid it just because of that. However, I am pretty certain most of these places are not going to cause someone to skip over, even the hole-in-the-wall locals.

As I visit each place, I will take a picture of the burger as it is placed in front of me and then I will write a separate blog for each one. To try and keep things as fair as possible, I will order the location's "signature" burger. How it is listed on the menu is how I will get it unless there are certain things I am supposed to control like cheese choice (FYI, I almost always choose pepper jack. I guess you could say it's my jam... did I even just say that right?). By the end, I hope to have some kind of grading system in place to determine the winner and loser. So, I hope you enjoy my writings about some of the best burgers that Aiken has to offer!
